Captain America: The First Avenger

Hello again...I am still here! It's been awhile since I've blogged on movies I've seen. I have been diligent with editing my novel, but I admit I still make time to watch a movie or two. ;)

I saw Captain America a while ago, the second day it was in theaters to be exact, but I still feel like giving my two cents on the movie. Chris Evans did a fantastic job portraying Steve Rogers and not once while watching the movie did I think of his previous roles; he was Steve Rogers not Johnny Storm aka Human Torch - Fantastic Four.

Hayley Atwell's performance as Peggy Carter, Captain America's love interest, was good, but I just wasn't feeling the character in the movie.

I thought the special effects and action scenes were done well unlike Thor, which in my opinion, was a little over the top.

The Avengers movie, set to be released May 2012, was set-up very well at the end of the movie.

79% of the reviewers at rottentomatoes.com liked the movie and I would have to agree that Captain America is solid blockbuster entertainment.

MIA But Finished My Novel....YAY!

I apologize for taking a hiatus, but I think it was necessary to finish my novel. Yes, I am at least done writing and when it was all set and done, I even added another chapter. So where am I now with "the book", the way I refer to it to family and friends, editing and more editing and editing some more...lol!

When I started writing "the book", I was in uncharted territory having never finished a book before, but I was determined to get the story out of my head and on paper. I promise you half way through "the book," I felt like I owed it to the characters, my friends, and family that have read every chapter along the way to finish! Now, I am already hearing the dreaded words, "When will you finish the second one?!"

OMG...Lord help me! :)

As many writers already know, which I am just learning, my work is not over. It is just the beginning as I edit and edit some more. I still plan to self-publish and I am hopeful to still get this book out the door by the end of the year if not sooner. I have a date in mind, but dare not say!

I hope all goes well with editing, so I can finally share the story with the e-publishing world and the title, which I am keeping under-wraps for now as well. I can tell you that I loved writing the story and the characters, but what writer doesn't say that about their work?

In addition, when it was all said and done, my final draft before editing was a little over 100,000 words and I never thought that I could write so much and create a world and characters that I have fallen in love with.

I hope to share the book title and the release date soon!

Cheers!! :)

Amazing!! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Going Batty!!

Hey everyone, sorry for my absence. After my friend's wedding and the crash course in learning 4 songs, I pretty much have been a bat in a cave working on my novel. I had to emerge however, to see the last installment of Harry Potter. I was not disappointed at all! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was amazing and the reviewers at rotten tomatoes agree.

Click here to watch the trailer.

So far, it's the best action/adventure feature I've seen this summer and if I had time I would go see it again. I'm not sure how much you would like the film if you haven't seen any of the previous movies or read any of the books. My mom hasn't seen anything Harry Potter related and I recommended she wait until they start appearing on Netflix and watch the previous ones first.

For the fans however, this movie is a must see! In addition, you might want to bring plenty of tissues because there were moments when I was fighting back tears.

Part 2 of Deathly Hallows is very similar to Part 1 in that the director pretty much matches the storyline of the book. Besides a few differences here and there and a little stray from the original book ending, its close to all being there.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, with a run time of 2 hours and 10 minutes, marks the end of the series, but definitely earns the title of being a great summer movie. :)

The Last Days of Harry Potter and A Wedding Singer?!

I was asked by my friends to sing in their wedding and even though my mind was screaming, "are you crazy you are writing a book," I said yes. So, the wedding is this Saturday and I am finding my time consumed with learning the four songs I have never heard before; Keeper of the Stars, I do, I will be here, and Simple Things. I just couldn't say no, they are good friends of mine, plus they said they enjoyed my recording of I'll be Home for Christmas that I did a few years ago for my mom and they wanted my voice at their wedding...Awe! Who could say no to that!

Here's a link to my rendition of the song on Myspace.

I'll Be Home for Christmas

Please excuse my myspace page if it is in disarray, I have to find time to fix it one day, but seriously does anyone use Myspace anymore?

Anywho, while practicing and nursing a migraine headache (yes, singing with a migraine is not fun) I ran across a video of the last days of filming Harry Potter on Reading Teen. I have to admit I was choking back tears. Harry Potter has been an escape for me and many people for many years and I owe it to J.K. Rowling for reawakening the writer in me.

When I was younger, I would read tons of Nancy Drew (was disappointed by the movie by the way) and Hardy Boys books and discovered then that I loved to write. I wrote all the time and still have the many drafts of the stories I attempted to write. My young age however, prevented me from having the real-life experience to draw upon to give my characters the development I really wanted them to have so I stopped writing. It wasn't until years later, after I read the pages of Harry Potter that my imagination started to flow again and so did the pen! ;)

So cheers to the cast of Harry Potter for all the years given to bring the characters to life and to J.K. Rowling for inspiring millions in so many ways. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the last movie in the series and even though the books and the movies will live on, we are sad the adventure has come to an end.

Okay, now back to practicing for me!

Transformers: Dark of the Moon...Redbox or Netflix??

I am sorry to report the answer would be neither. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is neither redbox or netflix worthy. At a run time of 157 minutes, I had to fight to keep my eyes open which I did because I paid to see the movie. For a summer movie and a 4th of July weekend release, I was highly disappointed. Just to be fair, some of my friends said they liked it, but they also saw it in 3D. So, maybe 3D makes it better. Anyhow, I will just have to wait until next Friday, July 15 to recapture that summer magic with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

Trailer

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 38% like on the rotten tomato reader and I would have to agree. There really wasn't enough character development in the humans or the robots to make me care when the action finally kicked in. I would like to note that 90% of the audience that reported watching the movie on rottentomatoes.com gave it a thumps-up. It also was a treat to hear Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek) as the voice of Sentinal Prime.

In addition, I heard that people were taking children to see this movie which is PG-13 and there is definitely some sexuality going on in a couple of scenes between Shia LaBeouf (Even Stevens, Disturbia, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Victoria's Secret Model). Just wanted to give those who are planning to take young children a heads-up; nothing revealing though.

Until next time, go enjoy a summer movie!! :)

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (Part 2) -- July 15!!

Karrboy84 alerted me to the new Harry Potter trailer released by Warner Brothers recently and I found it on YouTube to share it with everyone.

I think this is the same preview trailer that aired before the showing of Green Lantern on Friday.

New Trailer Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows -Part 2-

If you haven't read the final book of the Harry Potter series then let me clue you in that the second half of the book was very exciting and part 2 of the final movie should be the same.

Thanks Karrboy84!

Green Lantern or Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer??

Hey Guys and Gals! I saw the new movie Green Lantern at the theaters on Friday and let's just say the villain in this story was very reminiscent to the threat in Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. So I guess Ryan Reynolds chiseled abs would make him the Silver Surfer.

I was happy to see Green Lantern make it to the silver screen and equally happy to see the beautiful Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) play the love interest opposite Ryan Reynolds. I wasn't happy however with the story. I don't know what happened with this movie. Maybe there just wasn't enough character development to care once the film makers started to bombard us with the CGI (Which was very good by the way!).

Even though Ryan Reynolds' performances was excellent, it wasn't enough to save this movie. The reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes gave Green Lantern 133 rotten tomatoes and I would have to agree that it was thinly written.

Green Lantern Trailer

On a side note, a friend of mine thought Green Lantern was better than Super 8, but I thought Super 8 was better (Check out my Blog Archive to read my review of Super 8). I guess you will have to decide for yourself!

Go enjoy yourself at a summer movie! :)

Super 8 : A Classic Summer Blockbuster

I liked Super 8, but it was definitely a Netflix or Redbox movie. I would not recommend it to someone on a budget. Your money could be better spent on another summer movie like X:Men: First Class or maybe Green Lantern. I’m going to see it tonight!

Super 8 reminded me of one of those movies my mom and dad would rent in the 80’s and make a big deal about it because it was a Steven Spielberg movie (I found out later that it actually was..LOL),but when you watched it, it was more about family strife or tension and how they resolved it then action. I agree with the reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes that it was a little bit too reminiscent of classic summer blockbuster movies for me.

Overall, it's a good story and there is action, but action is not the main focus in this movie; family and friends are. Pretty much I would say the movie was "The Sandlot" meets "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" meets "Godzilla"! And I am not talking about today’s Godzilla, but the Godzilla movies of the 80’s.

Super 8 Trailer

I want to point out that I specifically liked the beginning of the movie. It was unique and it really helped to get the suspense going, but then the action takes a break to deal with family and relationships. Oh, and I did like seeing there were several African American actors in the movie. Usually minorities specifically people of color get one role, if that, per movie.

If you do decide to go see Super 8, go with a loved one or a good friend. It really is a family oriented movie. ET phone home!

The Woes of Writing and X-Men: First Class Review

Hello guys! I feel like I've been cheating on my blog by not posting my thoughts on a few movies I have just seen. I also read a post on Karsten Knight's blog in which he talks about experiencing "writers guilt" for spending time writing on his blog and not on his then unpublished novel "Wildfire." I actually like what I have heard about the book and it seems right up my alley with mystical powers based on Roman or Greek Mythology (not sure which). Any who, what I am getting at here is that I often feel guilty if I spend "too much" time on other activities when I can be wrapping up my first book, which I am really excited about, but I promise I will have more to share by the end of July!

So, X-Men: First Class...I loved it and so did the reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie takes place before Charles Xavier becomes Professor X and before Erik Lehnsherr becomes Magneto. It definitely was worth watching in the theaters and it should even be worth it for the diehard fans.

Diehard fans will notice some discrepancies compared to the original comic book storyline, for example, Havoc is actually Scott Summers (Cyclops) younger brother, but he appears in the prequel. Also some of the first class members that appeared in the comics are MIA such as Jean Grey (Marvel Girl aka Phoenix).

X-Men: First Class Movie Trailer

In summary, regardless of the variants from the original story, X-Men:First Class is an excellent summer movie! Now back to my book!

Cheers!

I Am Number Four on DVD – Released May 24

A review on Rotten Tomatoes said “I Am Number Four” was a familiar plot and forgettable, but I am going to have to disagree. 61% of rotten tomatoes users said they liked it and I can understand why. The movie starring Alex Pettyfer ( John Smith) is about a 15-year old alien from the planet Lorien, who is trying to escape extinction after a race of beings called the Mogadorians destroyed their race and home planet. John is a part of the Garde, special Loriens who have abilities or powers. There are nine Garde left and John is number 4. The movie was directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), produced by Michael Bay (Transformers) and the screenplay by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Writers of Smallville).

I Am Number Four Trailer

I thought the story plot was good and I loved the action. Any blind spots, such as the lack of character development and missing pieces in the back-story, I assumed it was lost in the adaptation from novel to movie. Wait! I didn’t mention the movie is based on a novel by the same name written by Pittacus Lore (a pseudonym for James Frey and Jobie Hughes)??? Oh, and didn’t I mention that James Frey is the same author of the controversial autobiographical book A Million Little Pieces?? Yup, he is! James Frey was invited to the Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his book after she placed it on her book club list. Oprah then invited Frey back on the show to discuss allegations that emerged later that parts of the autobiography were embellished or a fraud.

Oprah Apologizes to James Frey (Video)

I Am Number Four, the book, spent 7 straight weeks at #1 on the children's chapter of The New York Times Best Sellers List and I plan to read it and the second book in the series, The Power of Six, when it is released August 23, 2011.

“I Am Number Four”, the move, is definitely worth watching at the redbox or on Netflix and you can decide if it is worth owning on DVD.

Smallville DVD’s on Sale for $13… Walmart Online Only!

If you missed out on the 10 year series or just want to relive the magic, now is your chance to pick up those Smallville DVD’s you have been wanting.

I am sure the DVD’s will only be priced at $13 for a limited time and the discounted price is only available through Walmart Online not in stores.

The complete season DVD’s are usually priced around $60 each and if you poke around the website you may find other TV series DVD’s on sale too.

Happy Bargain Hunting!

The End of Smallville - 10 years; 10 seasons

I started watching Smallville at the beginning of the 4th season after family and friends continually raved about it. After watching a few episodes, me being the superhero fan that I am, was immediately hooked. I quickly caught up on previous seasons and over the years became a huge fan of Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack). It wasn’t until 7th season that I finally decided that I was tired of devoting my Thursday nights to the show and considered Chloe’s marriage to Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore) my own series finale. It felt like a perfect time to depart from the show with my favorite character finally finding love. It wasn’t until I saw the 8th season DVD go on sale at Walmart (Now on sale for $13 a season at Walmart Online) that I followed the show again picking up the 9th season as it became available on DVD. I was surprised that the show was still going strong after Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum’s) departed from the show.

Season 10 was an amazing final season and the writer’s did a fantastic job tying up the storyline. I really liked seeing Chloe again and the tribute to the Superman movies that immediately took me back to Christopher Reeve as Superman. I did however feel cheated not seeing Lana Lang again. I guess it makes sense that she was not there with her permanent kryptonite body suit in all, but she did get a mention in the final episode. The writers could have at least had her send Clark a video; she had experience doing that sort of thing in the show. I really think they gave Smallville fans what they wanted and probably pleased diehard Superman fans too. The series ended just where the television show Lois and Clark would begin (Spin-Off anybody??).

The final episode to season 10 was split into two parts, but you can watch it in its entirety through the CW Smallville website. Watch it now to see how it all ends while it is still on the website otherwise you will have to wait until the DVD.

GO Clark!!

Video Footage of Deadly Tornados

Karrboy84 found these amazing tornado videos and I thought I would share.

This one is from a couple of guys that are not trained. They got way too close and thankfully one of them was smart enough to say “back the fuck up” and the driver threw it into reverse. The tornado crosses the interstate where they had been about 15 seconds later.

This is the recent May 22, 2011 Joplin Missouri tornado that was rated an EF 5.

The June 23, 2007 Manitobe tornado was the last recorded F5 tornado before the switch to the “EF” scale. This thing gets pretty incredible between 3:15 and 4:15. The Enhanced Fujita Scale rates the strength of a tornado and it is based on the damage they cause which is related to wind speed.

Please Heed Tornado Siren Warnings!

I am always amazed by the power of tornadoes, but have a tendency not to react immediately to tornado siren warnings because often my area is not affected. I would say its sort of like "Crying Wolf" syndrome.

At 1 minute 27 seconds and 2 minutes and 19 seconds into the video you can witness the power of these deadly tornadoes.

My heart and prayers go out to those affected. I hope we heed the warnings and not give in to "Crying Wolf" syndrome.

MTV's Teen Wolf is Not Twilight!

Okay Twilight fans, I am not hating on the series. I just get tired of reading reviews, comments, blogs, and YouTube videos in which every paranormal movie, show, book, etc. is being compared to twilight. There are some original shows out there that have nothing to do with the series and honestly probably shouldn't be compared. Speaking of original and not, MTV is remaking the 80's classic movie, Teen Wolf (1985), into a television series.

Click to watch MTV Teen Wolf Trailer

The show will premier on June 5 after the MTV Movie Awards and after watching the series trailer I can't tell if it will be a hit or miss. I am going to have to catch a few episodes to decide; however don't be surprised if the show rings a little too much like CW's Vampire Dairies. I read comparison's somewhere to Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Sara Michelle Gellar and so far, I don't see it. If anything the trailer left me asking where is "Boof"? How is this a Teen Wolf movie remake without his iconic best friend love interest?

On another note, I was excited to see our little Tyler Posey (Maid in Manhattan, Smallville, Lincoln Heights) all grown-up and starring in this television series. I was impressed with his acting chops as Jennifer Lopez's son in Maid in Manhattan (2002) and wish him success with this new series!

Thor...The God of Thunder..Hit or Miss??

Okay, you might be thinking why on Earth did he spend his time and hard earned money to see that movie? Well, I am a sucker for action and superhero movies regardless of how bad they are. To give you an example, I even went to see 2009’s J.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra and I have to admit I even own it on DVD.

Besides my taste in movies, what did I think about Thor starring Chris Hemsworth?? Save your money! I have to go against its favorable review on Rotten Tomatoes this time around and agree with Roger Ebert. Maybe I am being unfair by comparing it to previously released Marvel comics made into movies, but it does have a list of blockbusters to live up to like Spiderman, Iron Man, and X-men. Thor just missed the mark for me. The Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) of Asgard was visually amazing and the battle scene with the red-eyed ice monsters was great! Natalie Portman played Jane Foster in the movie, but I just recently watched her role in the Black Swan so that’s all I kept thinking about when she appeared on the screen.

I do want to give kudos to Chris Hemsworth for starring in his first movie and for his body transformation into the almighty Thor.

Click here if you want to see before and after photos.

It wasn’t his performance that hurt the movie; I think it was the lack of grandeur. It’s a movie about Thor, the god of thunder, and he spends a majority of the movie in some small desert town discovering that he’s arrogant...how boring is that?? I guess I wanted more action and for him to blow up more stuff not to teach me about being humble which I guess would be suitable if this was a movie made just for young children.

So this movie was a miss for me, but definitely Netflix worthy. For those of us that would like to see more of Mr. Hemsworth, he is scheduled to appear as Thor in The Avengers movie currently in production with a release date sometime in 2012.

Okay...Movie Review!!

I saw the movie Priest starring Paul Bettany, who I think is a good actor, but seriously scared me in his role as Silas in The Da Vinci Code. Since then, I have recovered after his more somber role as Jarvis in both Iron Man movies plus there was nothing else paranormal or action/hero/villain for me to see at the movies.

Let's just say that Paul Bettany is believable in his role as a priest in a world of humans versus vampires. Maggie Q also shines as a priestess in this movie; however I wish we saw more of her marital arts talents. I was happy to see familiar faces Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Star Trek,The Bourne Supremacy) and Cam Gigandet (Twilight) but wasn't impressed with their roles in this movie.

Priest Trailer

Overall, I thought the movie was okay and that it probably would be better as a book than a movie. The plot and the characters were great; priest that seem dark and mysterious and that can kick ass actually turned out to be appealing and interesting to watch, but the ending was sort of anti-climatic and the movie sort of fell apart in the middle.

I would recommended waiting for the redbox on this one.

Celine is back in Vegas!

I hope I can make it to see Celine Dion in Vegas before she decides to leave again. In the video below she is singing one of my favorite songs. I can hear my friends and family telling me now that I say every Celine song is my favorite song. What can I say, but I love me some Celine! I still love Mariah's version and the original done by Journey better, but hey its Celine! Maybe I'll do a video cover! :)

Any who, Celine looks great in the video and her voice is amazing as usual. I am amazed how great she looks after just having twins! Here's a link to a clip of her on Oprah with her twin boys and a glimpse of her amazing home in Florida. Kudos to her stylist or her good taste because that dress is stunning! Celine will be in Vegas over the next three years so I have no excuse not to make it!

Celine I promise I am coming!! :)
